Opening Update: Let there be light(s), flooring, and loos

“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” – Fredrick Douglass.

We are now reaping the benefits of our initials struggles, or at least that is what we are telling ourselves. Things have been coming along since we obtained our construction permit a few weeks ago.

The new lights have been installed. With 10,000 lumens of output these babies might be brighter than the sun at full blast. Good thing we put them on a dimmer!

Big Ass Lights (sorry mom, that’s their real name 🙂 )

The flooring has been delivered. That’s a lot of rubber! At over 300 lbs per roll its 7500 lbs total. Moving this around is going to be one heck of a workout.

The bathrooms have been framed in…The one on the left is just a sink and toilet while the one on the right is handicapped accessible and has a shower!!

And the shower installed. That seat isn’t so you can take your sweet time.

Things are on track for our March 11th Open House event and March 13th Opening Day!

Standing Still Is Hard

We recently started watching the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. A line from the show’s theme song has stuck with me as we have struggled the past few months to make progress towards opening day. Each night Regina Spektor would sing to me “Taking steps is easy, Standing still is hard”. Although I cannot (and will not) compare permit purgatory to prison, this process has given me appreciation for the truth of Mrs.Spektor’s words.

We got the call this morning that our construction permit has been approved! It’s finally time to take steps and we couldn’t be more excited!  Our first steps will be installing the new bathrooms and installing new lights in the check-in/retail area as well as the office.

Hopefully the rest of Regina’s statement will prove equally true and we will sail through construction – straight to opening day. I have no doubt that waiting to breathe life into this dream will make the reality that much sweeter. Follow us on Facebook  and Instagram for more updates as things are about to start happening!

Opening Update: Permit Purgatory

The process of getting to opening day has been longer and more complicated than we had initially anticipated. Yes, it is our first time around this block. One of our goals as box owners is to be as inclusive and transparent as possible. We figured there was no better time to start than at the very beginning. At the moment we are waiting for approval from the Municipality of Anchorage for our construction permits.

The permits will allow us to start construction on:

  • Framing out two new bathrooms
  • A shower for our pre-work crowd
  • Update some of the lighting fixtures in the office and check-in areas
  • Taking down a few walls to open up the space as much as possible
